This report analyzes mini-grids (sometimes called micro-grids), which have been developing since 2013, and which have experienced strong development in Africa and Asia in recent years with the development of a structured market, together with the development of more sustainable energy models.

First, an industrial offer emerged with component manufacturers (e. g. GenSet, power electronics, batteries, etc.) who have taken an interest in this market by developing integrated solutions (e. g. Energy Storage Systems or ESS, Power Conversion Systems or PCS, Turnkey Mini-grids) or by acquiring stakes in existing players. The Energy Management System (EMS), a central component of these systems, has become increasingly "intelligent". This allows for better integration of hybrid systems in large projects and cost optimization.

In Africa, over 2,000 mini grids have been identified, solar projects accounting for 40% of those. Even if some countries like Tanzania have developed a strong regulatory framework, there is still a lack of regulations in most African countries. Nevertheless, with an enabling environment, by 2023, solar mini-grids are expected to scale rapidly to 16,000 sites.

In Asia, over 69,000 mini-grids have been identified (most of them being hydro or diesel). Solar mini-grids are mainly pulled by Indian initiatives and could rise from less than 2,000 projects in 2017 to over 15,000 by 2023

Infinergia provides an in-depth analysis of the market both at actors level and offers detail. It also provides precious insights on facilities in Africa and associated programmes.
